Michael Nunes is a composer and horn player from Sherwood Park, Alberta. At an early age, he became interested in orchestral performance and composition—switching his performing focus from piano to the horn, trombone, and other brass instruments.
As a composer and arranger, Michael has worked with many North American ensembles, bands, and soloists, including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Hannaford Youth Band, the Hogtown Brass Quintet, the Toronto Tuba and Euphonium Symposium, Robert Bernhardt, Anita McAlister, Hannah Corbett, Gabrielle Turgeon, Charles Watson, Jacob Valcheff, Lucy Nesbitt, Luca Ortolani, Jan Janovsky and his band, Diana Dawydchak, Ben Storm, Matthew Chan, and the Strathcona Christian Academy Senior Band, Film, and Fine Arts departments.
He has studied piano, theory, and jazz harmony with Jan Janovsky, horn with Allene Hackleman and Neil Spaulding, composition with Professor Larysa Kuzmenko, voice and acting with Rachel Haverkamp, and been mentored by Dr. Allan Gilliland. His debut orchestral premiere—Reverie—was commissioned and performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 2016. He was awarded first place in the Alberta Provincial Music Festival’s “16 and Under” and “Senior” composition classes, adjudicated by Dr. John Burge and Dr. Andriy Talpash, respectively.
Michael is currently a composition student in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Toronto, studying composition privately with Professor James Rolfe and Professor Gary Kulesha, and horn with Gabriel Radford. He is also a founder and current Media & Documentation Coordinator of Green Room Music—a performing organization dedicated to the creation of new dramatic works for chamber ensembles. In his spare time, he can be found playing his melodica.
Michael is a member of SOCAN and the Canadian League of Composers. He currently plays horn with the National Academy Orchestra of Canada.
