Program Notes:
I spent my childhood in England, and we would often visit ancient castles on family days out. Sometimes they were just ruins, other times they were completely intact – it didn’t matter to me. I remember playing along the parapets and climbing up the towers and letting my imagination run wild. I would visualize epic processions displaying colourful heraldry, vibrant costumes and splendid pageantry. The drawbridge would be lowered, the monarch would arrive and the festivities would begin. This piece is a reliving of those vivid memories. Featuring majestic fanfares, powerful percussion and dramatic contrasts, I wanted to create a heroic and regal concert opener for young musicians that will spark the imagination.
