Program Notes:

According to historical records, “Monday, Sept. 10, 1849. James Robinson arrives to assist in Chariton’s birth. He finds five men and a boy seated around a deck of cards and an empty whiskey jug in the tall grass at what is now the southwest corner of the town square.” So began the opening chapter of Chariton’s history. What followed? A burgeoning community, a coal mining and railroad boom, dynamic people like Smith Mallory, Theopolis (Buster) Gibson, Dr. Dora Wyland McAfee, and Capt. Helen Malony Talboy. Like the town’s story, Chariton Chronicles is rich in thematic statements both lively and lyrical which capture the vibrancy of this great Midwest town.
