Program Notes:
This piece came about after a series of composition workshops with the Grade 7 class at Uxbridge Public School just before the summer of 2017. In the workshops, students were given a series of images and asked to invent a musical idea that might represent the image. In small groups, they created patterns that ranged from scale-based ideas to random clusters and pointillistic gestures. As a class, we ordered them into a “composition” and discussed pacing, repetition, tension and release, beginnings, and endings. From the sketches of the student ideas, and the basic order of their concepts, this piece was created.
