Program Notes:

The inspiration for Free Running came from two quite different sources. One was the pointillistic paintings of Seurat, with images created by painting tiny spots of primary colours on his canvas – much like pixels on a computer screen – he created pictures that shimmer with brilliance. Admiration of these paintings led to the idea of creating a piece of music using only very short notes. The other source of inspiration was Parkour, a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the structures of the city and rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints. The combination of these two ideas led to the creation of a high velocity piece of music made up of staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble.
