Program Notes:

This is the sixth in the “junior concerto” series, intended to feature senior musicians at Middlefield C.I. This piece is a light concert piece, with minimal ensemble difficulties, accessible harmonies, and a melodious solo part. The ensemble it was written for at the time lacked certain sections, and so this piece was composed without oboe, baritone, and tuba parts. In addition, there is only a single trombone part.

The title comes from soloist Jahnavi’s nickname, “Janu”. Written for her, it is literally “Janu’s Waltz”, but the reference to the Roman god Janus is reflected in the basic structure of the music. The waltz is in ABA form. The “A” section is framed in G minor. The “B” section, in keeping with the mythology of the two-faced god, is its direct opposite: D♭ major.
