Commissioned by Ramer Wood Public School, Markham, Ontario (Danica Brokelman, director) to mark the 25th anniversary of the school
Program Notes:
The original [settler] families in Markham were the ones who built Yonge Street, a main artery for the city of Toronto. Lord Simcoe was Governor General and wanted a road to connect the city of York (now Toronto) to the northern areas of the province, and offered land to anyone who would help construct it. A group of Pennsylvania Germans moved in, built a section, and were given land in Markham; Ramer Wood Public School is built on the old Ramer family plot, where they had a woodlot. This piece was composed to reflect both the history of the Ramer family and the celebration of the school's anniversary.
