Program Notes:
This is the fifth “junior” concerto written for the senior ensemble at MCI. The intention was to write a more compact piece, instead of previous attempts that were often built out of mini-movements. In addition, there was a desire to make use of a percussion contraption that was built for a performance of John Mackey’s “Foundry”. That piece required percussionists on metal mixing bowls, and for the school’s performance, two large A-frames were constructed from which four metal bowls could be hung. The A-frames were occupying space, and the decision was made to put them to use again.
The piece was premiered in an ensemble without supporting trombones, or any low brass. In the summer of 2014, it was revised to include these instruments. As well, a second horn part and an oboe part was included. Some minor changes to the orchestration were made in an effort to help
the soloist project, particularly in the endings of the two outer sections. Finally, a small meter change was made at the beginning to help co-ordinate the start of the dance.
