Program Notes:
This is a work that explores the stages of the grieving process. For many people these four stages are not segregated, but rather form a continuous, dynamic, overlapping process. The opening motif heard in the clarinet in the first measure is the thread connecting every section of the work. This thread evolves as it makes its way through the four respective stages. Roughly, the divisions of the work are: "Denial" (mm. 1–28); "Anger" (mm. 29–36); "Sadness" (mm. 37–53); and "Acceptance" (mm. 54–62).
