Program Notes:

A technique that I try to explore throughout many of my compositions is the juxtaposition of contrasting musical sections, and Gearshift Arena continues this trend. In this work, I have constrained myself to using only melodic and harmonic materials which can be derived from an eight-note row (stated occasionally throughout the piece) or its inversion. This led to the creation of two primary sections – one defined by repeated notes and dissonant harmonies, the other by percussive rhythms and high energy – as well as a number of “interludes.” All of these sections come together in unique ways, shifting from one to another in ways that are both organic and abrupt. The title Gearshift Arena is derived from the nature of these transitions, as well as the high-octane “Battle Royale” feel of one of the recurring thematic ideas.
