Program Notes:

Written for the Senior Wind Ensemble at Middlefield Collegiate Institute, Kim Nei Huang and Wendy Lee (soloists).

This is the first “junior” concerto written for the senior ensemble at MCI. The featured soloist were grade 12 percussionists Kim Huang and Wendy Lee. The title of the composition is an anagram of the letters of the two performers’ names. There was no intention to convey any musical meaning to the sense of the title. However, given that both soloists are Chinese, the inclusion of a Chinese name in the title was appropriate. In Mandarin, “Ling” means “small bell”, and “Mei Yun” means “beautiful cloud”.

The ensemble of this particular year featured all woodwinds, a horn player, a trombone player, and a percussionist. While the original concept was to be for a concert band, the lack of trumpets and low brass necessitated a change in orchestration. The original version of the music was then
for a small ensemble, and later re-orchestrated for full concert band in 2011. The soloists are featured on timbales, mallet instruments, and snare drums. Two players are also required for the “ensemble percussion”.

The piece is constructed in a basic three-movement form which proceed without a break from one to the next.
